£835 now raised (including Gift Aid)

I have just donated £668 (835 with Gift Aid) to Rugby Young Carers via Warwickshire Carers Project's fundraising website here.

When Gift Aid is added on by the charity, my donation will amount to £741. Thank you to everyone who sponsored me (listed below) and thanks to the local media for publicising my efforts (Rugby Observer, Rugby Advertiser and BBC Coventry & Warwickshire).

I hope my donation will help Rugby's young carers by proving them with a fun trip out. If any businesses or individuals wish to donate any more to help make this a reality, please donate on this website or get in touch.

Thank you!

Results are in...

The results of the half marathon are in. I came 41st out of 704 competitors, with a time of 1h33m17s. I'm pleased with that. I hope to hit my £500 target for Rugby Young Carers soon.

My post-run post...

Had a great run this morning at the Emirates Golf Club. I completed the half marathon in approxmately 1hr33m, which I was very happy with. I came 46th out of 900 runners. Here's a pic at the finish line (pre-shower!) Here's a photo of me and my brother Paul, celebating. It was a really well-run race and the route was lovely, taking in some lakes and even abit of sand by the golf course. Being Dubai, the post-run breakast was sumptious, more like a wedding reception. See here. Thanks for sponsoring me!

Early doors

04:54... Up after a bad night's sleep of about 3 hours... Wish me luck!

In Abu Dhabi...

I've arrived in Abu Dhabi now where I'm visiting my brother, who works out here. Off to Dubai later. There's been a sandstorm but I'm told the weather should clear by the race tomorrow.

My interview about the run on BBC Coventry & Warwickshire radio

Clive Eakin of BBC Coventry & Warwickshire interviewed me about the run on Friday. You can listen to the interview here (23m10s onwards)

I also had my photo taken by the Rugby Observer (who thankfully ensured I looked suitably ridiculous, with Sudocrem smeared on my nose, a sun hat on and shades)...Should be in the paper on Thursday.

Running / pushing...

Did a 5.50 run this afternoon. Slower pace (please forgive me!) as was pushing the pushchair avec two little ones!

Coventry Telegraph report on my run

Rugby dad runs in Dubai half marathon to help young carers

by Duncan Gibbons, Coventry Telegraph

Mar 16 2012

A RUGBY man is running in the Dubai Half Marathon.

John Slinger, 37, hopes to raise £500 for Rugby Young Carers at the event, next Friday.

The group works with children aged six to 18 who look after an ill or disabled family member.

John, who has two young daughters and a teenage stepson, said: “As a father of young children, I know how much effort is involved in looking after a family, so I really want to do something to help those young people who have to take on the huge responsibility of caring for a family member at such a young age.

“I hope any money I raise will go to providing Rugby Young Carers with the funds to arrange a fun activity or trip.”

John’s band The 7.20s are playing at the Squirrel in Church Street, Rugby, from 8pm on Saturday where people can sponsor him or make a donation.

Sunday, Sunday...

As the Blur song goes. Off to the garden centre in the car with the children (there's a great indoor play area), then am planning to run home.

I've also taken to jogging on the spot at home as I've heard this is a superb way to maximise aerobic fitness and balance....

....JOKE!
